My video of emerging artist Sarah Sehra‘s live performance piece ‘Kullulu Kullulu’ in 2013 was edited in close collaboration with the artist. When Sarah was eventually awarded one of Turning Point’s ‘New Art West Midlands’ bursaries, the 15-minute video was used to represent her work in Wolverhampton Art Gallery during March 2014.

My work with Sarah continued in filming and still photography of her performance ‘She is Loom (Constrictions of a body)‘ This time the footage was produced under the direction of the artist, who then edited the work herself. The resultant video was shown at Birmingham’s Eastside Gallery during the same period.

Working in these different ways with one artist gave rise to reflections on the nature of authorship and the role of the film-maker / photographer in documenting performance artwork.
